How to Avoid a Car Crash during a Rainstorm

The rainy season sees its fair share of car accidents on the road. Whether it is torrential downpours or light showers, driving during a storm can cause car crashes. While you should avoid driving in the rain, Illinois weather can be unpredictable and you may find yourself caught in the middle of a downpour during your commute. How to Stay Safe in the Rain However, there are a few steps you can take to keep yourself and other drivers safe:

1. Turn on your headlights. Even if you believe it is not dark enough outside to warrant switching on your vehicle’s headlights, it is best to stay on the safe side. When it is raining, the skies are usually cloudy and there is little sunlight available. Other drivers may be older or have poor vision, so having your headlights on can help them detect your vehicle. Keep in mind, however, not to turn on your fog lights if it is not foggy outside. Intense headlights can make it more difficult for drivers to see what is going on in front of them.
2. Do not hit the brakes if your vehicle skids. If your car begins to skid, avoid slamming your foot on the brake pedal. Instead, take your foot off the accelerator and steer straight until you regain control of the car.
3. Drive slower than usual. You should minimize speed when driving in rain. How slow you should drive depends on the speed and intensity of the rain. All too often, people drive at a speed of 60 miles per hour during torrential rains––which can cause fatal accidents. This is because your vehicle is more likely to skid on wet roads, or it may rear-end into another vehicle that is driving slower than you.
4. Be attentive. When there is a downpour, do not switch channels on the radio or rummage through your purse. Keep both hands on the steering wheel, and focus on the road. Driving in less than ideal weather and road conditions requires more focus and attentiveness on the part of the driver.
5. Practice safety over convenience. If you are driving at night and there is a strong rainstorm, you may find it extremely difficult to drive. If this is the case, pull over on the side of the road or freeway and wait out the storm.
