Pedestrians Face Daily Dangers

Posted on November 04, 2022 in Pedestrian Accidents

waukegan personal injury lawyerYou do not have to look too hard to see how frequently pedestrians are in the news for being involved in various motor vehicle accidents in the greater Lake County area. On October 19, 2022, the Lake & McHenry County Scanner reported that the McHenry County Coroner had identified a 47-year-old woman who was struck and killed while trying to cross Algonquin Road in Lake in the Hills.

If you or a loved one were involved in a pedestrian accident, you may be able to recover monetary compensation for your medical bills and other damages.

How Pedestrians Can Stay Safe

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) outlines eight safety tips for both drivers and pedestrians when it comes to pedestrian safety. This is good to understand because the truth of the matter is that both drivers and pedestrians have important roles to play in avoiding motor vehicle collisions.

When it comes NHTSA’s safety tips for drivers, they involve all of the following:

  1. Be constantly looking for pedestrians wherever you are at all times.

  1. Use additional caution whenever you are driving in conditions that make it difficult to see, especially at night but also in instances of bad weather.

  1. Always slow down and prepare to stop when you are either turning or entering a crosswalk.

  1. Always yield to any pedestrians in a crosswalk and try to stop well behind a crosswalk so other vehicles can see crossing pedestrians as well.

  1. Do not pass other vehicles in crosswalks because there may be people crossing that you cannot see.

  1. Do not drive while you are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs in any situation. This is a criminal offense and striking a pedestrian while you are under the influence can result in serious criminal charges.

  1. Obey the speed limit on all streets but especially when there are people walking on the street, in school zones, or in neighborhoods where children are present.

  1. Always use extra caution when you are backing up and try to look for pedestrians in these situations because they may be walking out of sight of rear-view cameras.
